If you re laying the lvp over an existing cushion backed vinyl floor or a below grade tile floor then you won t need to use an underlayment. Putting a soft product under vinyl plank will result in an unstable floor that is much more inclined to being damaged and even punctured or torn over time. Vinyl is waterproof which makes it perfect for kitchens or other high traffic areas such as a living room or den. Mohawk luxury vinyl tile can be installed directly over most existing floor coverings except for carpet laminate and cushioned vinyl flooring.

Vinyl planks require hard thin underlay because the product itself is softer. Wear layers and topcoats can protect the surface of your floor but underlay adds a layer of protection to the bottom of your boards or tiles. With the patented uniclic multifit vinyl planks can be installed horizontally vertically or at an angle so installation is easy and saves you both money and time. While underlayment for vinyl planks may be used under hardwood and laminate the reverse is not true.

The easiest way to figure out if you need underlayment for your new vinyl plank flooring is to look at your current floor. While vinyl flooring is known for its resiliency it would be a major mistake to overlook the underlayment.
